*Your appointment includes an ultrasound scan before the blood test. During the scan, we will check that the pregnancy is progressing, confirm how many weeks pregnant you are, and confirm whether you are expecting one baby or multiples.

How does the test work?

During pregnancy, tiny fragments of your baby’s DNA, known as cell-free fetal DNA, circulate naturally within your bloodstream. A small blood sample is taken and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

The laboratory looks for the presence of Y chromosome DNA:

Y chromosome detected → Baby is male

No Y chromosome detected → Baby is female
